     The Story, Wyoming area has a great abundance of recreational opportunities.  Below are some examples of the many recreational amenities of the region.

Big Horn Mountains & Bighorn National Forest

The magnificent Big Horn Mountains and massive Bighorn National Forest are just minutes away from Story, Wyoming. 

The Big Horns provide countless recreational opportunities including fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, backpacking, photography, wildlife viewing, skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling and sightseeing.

Wildlife Viewing & Photography

The Story, Wyoming region is an especially beautiful place when the wildflowers bloom in spring and during the autumn foliage season.

There are many loop tour options available and sightseeing opportunities are endless. 

Wildlife including Pronghorn Antelope, Whitetail Deer, Mule Deer, Moose, and Elk are plentiful in the region.  Photography opportunities are endless.

Fishing

Fishing opportunities are countless in the Story, Wyoming area and in the region.  There are reservoirs, alpine streams and over 200 lakes in the Bighorn National Forest and the Cloud Peak Wilderness Area.

Guided fishing trips are also available with local outfitters. Anglers enjoy ice fishing at Lake DeSmet and other local lakes during the winter months. Fish found in the area include Grayling, and Rainbow, Brook, Brown, Cutthroat, Lake Trout and Walleye.

Hunting

The Story, Wyoming region offers marvelous hunting opportunities for trophy antelope, mule deer, whitetail deer, moose, elk, black bear, mountain lion, and upland game birds. Outfitters in the area offer guided hunts, or you can choose to go it on your own.

Hunting information is available at local Chambers of Commerce and sporting goods stores.

The Wagon Box Inn is an excellent base for the hunting enthusiast - just minutes away from great hunting opportunities in the Bighorn National Forest, many areas of State of Wyoming and Bureau of Land Management land and private areas with the landowner's permission.  Additional information on hunting in Wyoming can be found on the Wyoming Game & Fish Department website.

Lake DeSmet

Located ten minutes from Story, Wyoming off I-90, the lake was named after Father Pierre Jean DeSmet.  The lake was discovered in 1851 and today boasts excellent fishing and boating.  It is the site of the annual Buffalo, Wyoming Lion's Club Fishing Derby on Memorial Day weekend. 

The lake is about five miles long and more than one mile wide.  The Lake Stop Resort at Lake DeSmet rents fishing boats and sells groceries and supplies for for fishing, camping and other recreational activities.  There are two public boat launching areas at the lake.
